Keeping A Keener Eye With Vehicle Tracking Systems
In the effort to effectively monitor a particular vehicle running around the city, vehicle tracking systems are installed. Tracking is usually done through an electronic device installed on the vehicle that transmits information to a receiver remotely placed on an operational base. Vehicle tracking systems employ reliable and accurate global positioning system (GPS) technology to collect data about the present location of the vehicle. Using specialized software, the current location can be translated to an actual map.
Several vehicle tracking systems exist to serve different purposes and needs. Generally, these are classified as passive and active systems. Devices for passive systems use GPS to determine location and speed of the vehicle. Event triggers like on-and-off keys and opening and closing of doors are also typical of passive tracking devices. This system is considered passive in the sense that only upon returning to a particular point, the device is uninstalled and data collected is then transferred to a computer for analysis. An active system, on the other hand, collects similar information as the passive device. However, the data collected is transmitted in real-time to the operational base via satellite or cellular networks. Hence, this type is more appropriate for time-crucial operations that require immediate situational response.
Vehicle tracking systems have been used by fleet operators to monitor their fleet and assist in giving routing and dispatching instructions. The current location of the vehicle is also evaluated so that relevant on-board information as well as security measures can be given. Through advancement of the technology resulting to cheaper equipment, companies can now afford to install these devices on employee vehicles to monitor driving behaviour especially if these employees use the company car. Parents can also install these tracking devices on their vehicles so that they can monitor their children especially those in their teenage years who are just beginning to drive.
